I guess it is similar to having a pillow over your face, trying to breath through it, having consciously think about grasping for your next breath, that is what it feels like having asthma.
When I was in school everybody knew me. They knew me as the sick kid and all my teachers knew me. My PE teachers said, “You know, this is the guy that always brings the excuses to class why he cannot participate in the gym activities.” Later on, I just got tired of it, I did not want to be the benchwarmer anymore. I did not want to be the observer, I was tired to being sheltered, I did not want to have to take breaks and rest every time I had to run or do any kind of physical activity. So I just decided that is it, it is time for a change and I am ready to take any necessary steps to become a normal active human being.
Asthma affects different people in different ways. There is different triggers that could bring on an asthma attack. For some people, it could be you know dust, for some people, smoke, foods, bugs. I learned that I was highly allergic to dust mites and that it was a pretty huge trigger for my asthma. So the doctor recommended that I keep my house basically spotless.
Here are some of my breath savers, no point intended. You have got inhalers, aerosol inhalers. They come in all different types and colors. Something like this, I use whenever I am going to do some kind of running or sports. It is something that is more of an immediate effect that will open up the airways. This guy here is more of like a long term type of inhaler. If I am experiencing some chronic asthma or something like this, I will want to start taking this and it is not going to give you the effects right away but after a while it is going to start opening up the air passages.
What I will do is take a few puffs of my inhaler before I play basketball, that way it could open up my lungs. All the precautions that I take might seem like a lot of trouble to a lot of people but for me it is like nothing compared to the person that I was then and the person that I am now. Now, I am running everyday which is amazing, it is something that I never thought I would be able to do. And maybe I am not training for marathons but I am enjoying life a whole lot more.
