Patrick: Hi! I'm Patrick from Phoenix, Arizona. What kind of treatments are there for COPD and how effective are they?
Robert Wise: Patrick, you've asked an important question because we can do a lot to improve the lifestyle and quality of life of people who have COPD.
The mainstay of treatment for COPD is to quit smoking if someone's an active smoker. After that, important lifestyle changes like good nutrition, keeping your weight normal; not too high, not too low, influenza vaccinations are important in treating COPD.
One of the things that are very important in COPD is proper exercise and regular exercise which can be done in an active rehabilitation program or in a self-directed exercise program. There are many drugs now that open up the breathing passages or reduce the inflammation of the breathing passages. Many of these drugs are inhaled and these can improve both the functional capacity and the quality of life with people with COPD.
In people with advanced COPD, oxygen treatment and certain advance treatment such as lung transplantation may be necessary. The important thing is to understand that we have effective treatments for COPD that can improve people's quality of life and extend the length of their life.
