Question: How can caregivers help if their loved one is depressed? Mary Yates: Well, first you have to know what's wrong. A caregiver has to realize that there is nothing they can do to make the person well. They have to get help. They have to understand that this person who is depressed perhaps is what we could talk about depression, does not want to be that way. It's very hard to be around them, because everything is wrong and blue and sad. They can't help it, you can't make it better yourself, but you can get help, and that's the difference in this day and age. A depressed person can get help which wasn't true not too long ago, but with all the new medications and the pictures they can take and everything, there is help and the thing, and that's the hard part to go out and find the help. That's the big trick.
