This entire discussion is irrelevent because the Conservative constituency observes very little halacha. It's a total pick and choose, and in the conservative theology layed out in "emet ve'emunah", conservative belief encompasses all views of G-d and all takes on halacha, as long as three rabbis hold that position. This concept is absolutely ludicrous as is the notion that catholic Israel, made up of laypeople as well, can decide halacha. The greatest example is the eradication of the Torah verses dealing with homosexuality. They simply erased those verses. It may sound good in theory, but in practice, a fully observant conservative Jew is a needle in a haystack. It may be time for the speaker to find a new job, or just face up to reality. He is talking to a wall!
