How Cognitive Exercises Delay Alzheimer

Tim: Hi. I’m Tim, I live in Hartwick, Vermont. I’m 56 years old. I’ve heard the brain exercise can actually prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease and I’m wondering, what are some specific brain exercises that I can do at home?

Elkhonon Goldberg: One needs to distinguish between the disease and the detrimental effects on the brain and on the mind. Cognitive exercise cannot prevent the disease if you understand it narrowly that the accumulation of tangles and plaques in the brain. But cognitive exercises may trigger various other processes in the brain like increased vascularization of the growth of new connections between neurons, or maybe even the development of new neurons and this affects—positive effect will serve a protective effect which will counteract the effect of Alzheimer’s disease.

From a standpoint of a person who has a brain afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease, these protective may offset the detrimental impact of the disease and enable the person to function normally for a longer period of time.
