How Does the Morning After Pill Work

Mandy: Hi! My name is Mandy. I am from Los Angeles, and I am wondering how the morning-after pill works, and if you actually need a prescription to buy it over-the-counter. Petra Casey: Well, lots of people wonder about this same thing Mandy, because when the FDA approved the morning-after pill or Plan B last year, there was much confusion as to exactly how to obtain it. Women over the age of 18 years can obtain Plan B, which is two pills of levonorgestrel, which is a type of progestin over-the-counter without a prescription. Those women under the age of 18 still need a prescription from their healthcare provider. The morning-after pill works by inhibiting or delaying ovulation and thus does not interfere with implantation of a fertilized egg.
