How Droopy Eyelids Can Be Fixed
Dr. Travis Stork: This is a question that we received via Facebook. My left eyelids
droop so low that at night I have to hold it up to watch TV. Are
there any procedures to fix my droopy eyelid and even out my --
asymmetrical face, Drew?
Dr. Drew Ordon: So the F there is facial asymmetry. And the take home point is
we’re all uneven. Have you ever done that Jim where you’ve
compared the two sides of your face, where you take a photo and
you cut it half, you reverse it and then you put your two right sides
to create one face. They’re are totally different. So, before I
operate on anybody, I have to point out their facial asymmetries
and we all have it.
In this case, Susan wrote that her eyelids are uneven. And that’s a
very common area where the two sides just don’t match up. And
for most people, it can be just a little bit of excess skin. It also can
be a truly drooping eyelid, what we call eyelid ptosis. Here on the
mannequin, I'm going to show you how we can fix that.
Dr. Jim Sears: That guy’s eyelid is jacked up.
Dr. Drew Ordon: Well. Watch me fix it. So we make an incision here. First thing,
there's more skin on this side, so I'm going to remove the excess
skin on this side. Isn't that easy?
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Look at that.
Dr. Drew Ordon: I like that.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: No, blood --.
Dr. Drew Ordon: No bleeding. So first of all, that excess skin, so the crease is in the
same spot. But in this case, you have ptosis. You have a drooping
eyelid. You can born with that. It can be from trauma. It can just be
with age. So then what we have to do is inside, we tighten that
muscle and we actually bring up the eyelid so that it sits in the
same relationship to the pupil as the other side.
I want to show you how this works in real life. We have a before
and after with woman who was really uneven inner eyelids. She
under went eyelid surgery, remove the excess skin and actually did
a muscle tightening of her eye on the right side and now she's
much more balance and even than she was when you compare the
before and after pictures.
Dr. Travis Stork: So there's a fix for some of these more severe facial asymmetries if
it’s something that bothers you so much.
Dr. Drew Ordon: So awful there's a volume difference that -- like your cheeks are
different or your chin is different. There we can add fat or we can
use a facial implant. But for most people it’s a minor asymmetry.
So probably just learn to live with it.
