Raena Morgan: Hello, we’re visiting with Dr. Larry Robinson. He is the vice president of
scientific affairs at Embria Health Sciences. What is the body’s primary
line of defense against infection and how does EpiCor help that?
Dr. Larry Robinson: Well, if you think about it, really you’re talking about defense against
bacteria and virus—how are you exposed to them? They’re in the air;
they’re in things you touch; maybe around someone who sneezed; so it’s
your mucosal membranes. You get them through your nose, your mouth,
in your eyes and so forth. Anywhere you have a mucosal membrane.
Raena Morgan: Okay.
Dr. Larry Robinson: So, that’s your body’s first line of defense. What protects your mucosal
membrane is your immune system. In fact, the mucosal membrane itself is
a very, very important part of the immune system. In fact, there’s even a
complex name for it—MALT, or the Mucosal Associated Lymphoid
Tissue.
Raena Morgan: Oh, goodness, okay.
Dr. Larry Robinson: It’s such an important part of the immune system. Your gut is extremely
important. Even the natural, good bacteria in your gut are extremely
important for maintaining immune health and overall help in your body.
Raena Morgan: So is there a membrane barrier?
Dr. Larry Robinson: There is a membrane barrier and one thing that keeps the pathogens from
crossing that is your immune system. The primary—one of the primary
effectors in your immune system for the mucosal membranes is something
known as secretory IGA—or SIGA for short. This is the type of antibody,
produced by b cells, that the body makes that can recognize the bad
bacterium and can attach to them and keep them from attaching to you
membranes and causing and infection or crossing over the membranes and
making you sick. So this SIGA is an extremely important complex part of
the immune system that protects it from infection by bacteria, specifically.
EpiCor has been shown to support and increase levels of this natural SIGA
component of your mucosal membrane system. Specifically for the
mucosal line of defense, which again is so important to keep you from
getting sick from bacteria and viruses—it is your SIGA to a great extant
that protects you from these. And your EpiCor supports the production of
these types of antibodies.
Raena Morgan: Okay, well, thank you very much, Dr. Robinson. That clears that up.
Dr. Larry Robinson: Thank you.
