Caitlin: My name is Caitlin from Ohio. Can someone get genital herpes from a partner who carries the virus, but he has never had an outbreak? Lisa Flowers: Yes Caitlin. Herpes can be spread even if a Cold Sores is not present and usually this occurs when the person actually senses that they have some itching, or tingling or sensation in the area prior to where the Cold Sores actually will come out and it's called prodromal symptoms. From the time of these prodromal symptoms, until the Cold Sores represents itself, and until it's completely healed, the person can transmit the herpes virus to their significant other. Therefore, it's very important not to engage in anal, oral, or vaginal sex during this time period.
