How HDL and LDL Cholesterol Differ

Andrew: I'm Andrew from Orono, Maine. Can you explain the difference between HDL and LDL which is good, which is bad and does blood type have any effect on their levels? Dr. Mimi Ghosh: Thank you for your question Andrew. Cholesterol is transported through the body through proteins. The cholesterol-protein combination is called a lipoprotein. Low Density Lipoprotein is LDL, the bad cholesterol. This is the kind of cholesterol that goes from the liver and goes to the arteries and causes damage. HDL is High Density Cholesterol, the good cholesterol. This is what brings cholesterol from the body back to the liver. We encourage people to have high HDL levels and low LDL levels. Does blood type affect this? It’s hard to say. There’s a lot of data out there what affects your cholesterol levels, but at this time there is really not enough data to say that blood type affects cholesterol. Thanks for your questions.
