How HP is Providing Green Printing

Mike Agerbo: A lot of people are obviously concerned about the environment now and especially when it comes to technology. What can companies do? What can we do to make this better? We’re going to find out. Well, to help us understand how we can be more eco-friendly when it comes to printing, we’re going to be speaking with Vernon Coutinho from Hewlett-Packard. Thanks for coming in the show. Vernon Coutinho: Thanks, Mike. Mike Agerbo: So, I think a lot of people are concerned about this now, obviously, printers were using ink, were using paper which obviously have an effect on the environment. What are you folks doing to help out? Vernon Coutinho: Yeah, we have several initiatives that I think can help, a lot of printing in general and of course printing and then back to the environment. First and foremost is a really simple one. Hp.ca/smartweb is a printing tool adds a little button onto a browser, there’s no software to learn and this one actually help you reduce the amount of paper you use in printing by printing only the web pages or the web content on those pages that you need. So, quite simply I have a couple of examples here. Typically, if your printer and this is from a travel site you would end up getting all the Ads sometimes blank pages and then of course, all the content in this case it’s eight pages of different hotels that are printed out, but for example if all you needed was just maybe a couple of the hotels or even just one hotel, you don’t necessarily print all the eight pages. You definitely don’t need the Ads of course, and that’s what HP smart web printing does because it condenses those eight pages down to one page. So all you end up doing is getting the exact information you need. The other cool thing about it is you can actually save these pages at PDF document and sent it to someone, so right away you’re cutting down the number of pages you’re using in that, so of course it’s obviously good for the environment. Mike Agerbo: Would you use it? Vernon Coutinho: Absolutely. Mike Agerbo: Well let’s talk us about the equal highlight labels here as well. This is an important thing I think. Vernon Coutinho: Right, so the equal highlight label is something new that HP is using going forward with all our printers. It’s very simple when you buy a printer box, so when you look at the print of the box it obviously has all the great features and benefits that the printer has and you know, all the bells and vessels which is amazing. However, what we want to do is make sure that we also address the environmental friendly that our printers have. It actually tells you on this particular printer, just an example of course. The foot print of this printer which is 83% recycled plastic material that is what it’s made from. The cartridges also made from recycle and its Energy Star which makes one of the top 25% in its class in terms of the least amount of energy used. And of course, all of the packaging on this printer is recyclable and really that’s all about empowering customers to make more and informed choices, which brings me exactly to the third point I was going to talk about, about supplies and cartridge recycling. There’s different ways to recycle cartridges and we encourage all our customers to please do recycle cartridges. I know they are small and they are very easy to get rid off. However, if it comes like HP they are 100% recycled. How easy of this to recycle? Well, there’s simple ways you can do it. You get an envelope with a lot of pack cartridges in the box, so when you buy a new cartridge, you take out the new cartridge, check out the envelope, but all the cartridges in here, send it back to HP is prepaid, we’ll recycle them. If you don’t have an envelope and you still want to send them back to us you can do that, go to hp.ca/recycle. Print out the prepaid label, put it in any envelope, send it back to us, that’s fine too. The third option is you can go and take it back to some of our partners specifically Staples, have recycling boxes in there. We actually go pick up the cartridge from Staples and recycle them. So, really we made it really easy and the way I see it is just a natural progression. We all use recycling boxes in all our municipalities, where paper goes to one box. It becomes a second nature for us and this is what we want to happen with cartridges as well. Mike Agerbo: So, there’s no excuse for people not to recycle them. I mean, it’s so easy. Vernon Coutinho: It’s really easy. There’s no cost to it which is of course the key component and then of course it’s great for the environment for all of us as well as the next generations.
