Katie: Hi! My name is Katie. I live in Brooklyn, New York, and I have been hearing a lot on the news lately about the HPV virus and I am wondering how HPV causes cancer? James Marshall: Katie that's an important question. We don't understand completely how Human papillomavirus causes cervical cancer. We know that it leads to a kind of wart that appears to be a premalignant lesion. We know that there is a vaccine that prevents infection by the types of virus that are associated with increased risk. Whether those vaccines will prevent cervical cancer in the long run is something we will have to continue to study.
