When in doubt about electric projects, contact a license electrician.
Here’s what you’ll need to do the installation yourself, a programmable thermostat, a screw driver, some masking tape for labeling wires, a marking pencil and the batteries that your thermostat requires. First, turn off power to the ferniest. This supplies electricity to the thermostat. This is at your main electrical box. Then remove the face of the old thermostat. Next, detach and label the wires, note in the codes where they were connected to the old unit.
Remove the wall plate. Be careful when working with older models which contain mercury. Ask your local recycling center about proper disposal. To install the new unit, mount the plate. Then connect the wires using the corresponding codes. Add batteries if needed. Secure the new unit to the wall plate then turn on the power and program the new thermostat to warm the house when you’re there and to lower the temperature when no one is home. Keep in mind that an energy efficient setting for winter is 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Installing a programmable thermostat is one way to start saving energy.
