How Much DIY Solar Panels Cost
Hi this is Greg Peterson creator of the video series 12 things we must know before building a solar panel.
One question people ask me about my solar panels is, “How much did it cost?”
The answer depends on the size of your panel and materials used, so let’s use mine for an example. I built several 63 watt panels, using a wooden frame and tempered glass. The tempered glass made it a bit more expensive — most people use plexiglass, which is less expensive), but I wanted to try it out. These panels cost me right around $125 each, which works out to $1.98 per watt. If I had used plexiglass instead, I could have made them right around $100, or $1.58 per watt.
If we compare this to the average commercial solar panel, which costs in the neighborhood of $4 to $5 per watt, I can’t complain. One of the keys to keeping my costs down was using what are called split solar cells. It’s easy to do and will save you tons of money. I will show exactly how I did this in an upcoming video.
So how much does it cost to build a solar panel? About a third of what it costs to buy one brand new.
