Tracee Yablon-Brenner: The average American eats about two times amount of protein that is required for their body to work properly. You only need to have about 50-60 grams of protein a day which is about 10-12% of your calories or protein. A portion of protein would be like the size of palm of your hand, for a burger or lean meat feed by 2 or 3 times a day. Most people tend to eat much larger portion sizes especially if you are eating out. So, you need to be aware of your portion sizes as well to lose weight.
Infants, kids, pregnant women, nursing women tend to need more protein. The amount of protein you need daily take your ideal weight and you multiply that by 0.36 grams and that is how you would come to the exact amount of protein you need daily. Excessive protein consumption, especially animal protein will increase your chances for different diseases, especially heart disease, kidney stones, osteoporosis and strokes. So, you really need to keep that in mind if you are eating a high protein diet.
