Tony: Hi! My name is Tony from Hollywood, California and my question is how does nicotine cause addiction? Trey Causey: Well Tony, nicotine causes addiction in the similar manner to other drugs of abuse and alcohol that is it stimulates the reward circuit in the brain, the pathway that involves the feelings of pleasure and interest in things. Now drugs abuse hijacks this circuit and use it for the wrong purposes. Nicotine directly stimulates the neurons in that circuit which contain dopamine and it's this increase in dopamine that's associated in the pleasurable and the addictive qualities of smoking.
