How Parents Can Help Their Children By Opening Up to Them
Crystal: I was suspended 7 times from junior high school. I was almost expelled from high school for fighting. I got a felony DUI and totaled my first car my parents bought for me. I was pregnant at 17. I was doing drugs, going to raves, shoplifting and ditching class on a regular basis.
My parents divorced during junior high school and that kind of gave me free reigns in high school because my father was working and my mother had moved away. And so I just felt I could whatever I wanted to do and that’s exactly what I was doing.
My attitude really started to change at the end of my high school years. My dad really began opening up and sharing his personal stories with me about when he was younger.
Male: And in her later high school years and going off unto college then I determined it was the time to be open with her about basically mistakes I've made. If you can help educate them through your misbehaving or experiences in the past and if it will educate them and help them understand, which I think it will. They generally won't listen at first but as it sinks in sometimes it will help.
Crystal: Him sharing those stories really opened my eyes and showed me the way I'm going is not the way I need to go so I need to back it up, rewind and fix those problems.
After finishing college, I work for newspapers and magazines and eventually opened up my own vending business. It’s vending massage chairs and I currently report for a television news station in San Diego.
I think that my success at 24 definitely has something to do with my father’s sharing his experiences with me and being open and honest when I was in high school. If someone were to ask me if I would be that open and honest with my kids and share the stories that I went through and the things that I've done I would say yes in a heartbeat.
