How Radiation Therapy Works

Nancy: Hi! I am Nancy and I am from Brooklyn, New York. I have a family member who is going through radiation treatments, and I was wondering how radiation actually kills cancer cells? Sara Hurvitz: Very good question Nancy. Radiation kills cancer cells by exposing them to high levels of energy, either x-rays or gamma rays. The x-rays or Gamma rays will damage the genetic material in the cancer cells, so the cancer cell can't divide anymore, and it thus dies. Cancer cells don't have mechanisms to repair their DNA when they are exposed to these high levels of energy, because they are abnormal, whereas normal cells do have the ability to repair DNA after being exposed to radiation damage. This is why cancer cells are more susceptible to the radiation damage than normal cells are.
