How Safe Is the H1N1 Vaccine for Children
Dr. Jim Sears: Now usually with the flu, in most years I think kind of neutral, if parents really don’t want to give them I’m like “Okay, it’s probably okay.” But this H1N1 virus is very different, it affects kids a lot more seriously than the regular flu, that’s what I definitely, I’m recommending the H1N1 shots to all my patients but it’s hard for us as a pediatrician to convince some of these parents that are skeptical because all these emails are floating around with all this misinformation it’s very frustrating because parents are getting the wrong information, they’re worried that “there’s a new vaccine, it’s never been tested” and there’s all the ingredients that worries them but when in fact a lot of that information out there are false.
Dr. Travis Stork: I’m just going to give you the floor here, is the vaccine safe for kids?
Dr. Anne Schuchat: Absolutely, the influenza vaccines that are made against H1N1 are made exactly the same way as the seasonal flu vaccines are, about a hundred million people including a whole lot of children, gets these flu vaccines every year and they’ve really safety records. We haven’t cut any corners so based on everything that I know right now, these vaccines are much, much, much safer than getting the flu.
