How Sinus Infections Can Cause Asthma Attack
Male: Can a sinus infection lead to an asthma attack?
Alfin G. Vicencio: Sure.
Male: But really, we’re talking upstairs leading to downstairs, what’s the relationship between a sinus infection and somebody gets out of controlled asthma attack.
Alfin G. Vicencio: Well the upper and lower airways are very closely intertwined and often times when you have an insult in one portion of the airway then that can lead to an inflammatory response that actually affects a good portion of the other.
Male: So if you get thicken sinus wall or something we’re going to talk about release and that triggers of histamine release and that is the reason why you get some of it out of control?
Alfin G. Vicencio: Yeah, certainly, that’s one theory. Again, this is something that the research on these kinds of issues is still ongoing.
Male: So if that’s true, a drug like Singulair should help dramatically. And we still find that it doesn’t quite deal with -- it does in some but I could say it doesn’t and some say it doesn’t. So we don’t really rely on this whole mechanism fully yet?
Alfin G. Vicencio: No, that’s not -- that’s something that still needs a lot of work as far as really the complete understanding of that. It’s fine to say that sinus disease is often coexistent with somebody who has asthma and have been an allergic disease.
