Ashkin: Today, we're not going to be taking about Hollywood; we're going to be talking about Bollywood. Hi and welcome to watchmojo.com, I'm your host Ashley, and today we have a chance to speak to Bollywood dancer, Hemalayaa. Can you tell us exactly what Bollywood dancing is?
Hemalayaa: Bollywood film means the Indian cinema and Bollywood dancing because all the films are musicals, it's sort of inspired by the music because the sound tracks are so elaborate. And so Bollywood dance is, it's usually elaborate choreography. For my workshop it's not elaborate choreography at all, it's really actually just inspired by that music and you know we use that as almost a therapy for the body to release stress and all that.
Ashley: Do you have any idea when Bollywood dancing was created?
Hemalayaa: Bollywood is a spoof basically on Hollywood, because Hollywood makes hundreds of movies a year; India makes thousands. So they said, oh! You're Hollywood, please we are Bollywood. Because it's Bombay, and which is like LA.
Ashley: And so can you tell us a little bit about your classes?
Hemalayaa: We really use the movements and the music, the rhythm of the music to let go of stress and burdens and things in our lives, things that are energetically blocking us, and where we may energetically block ourselves. We actually use the dance, like these kind of movements to move our arms and to shrug our shoulders and bounce all of those stresses off of our body. And then we clear the space and then we actually infuse love and trust and compassion and all these things that we want and desire to be, our true selves. We use the movements, and the dance, and music to bring that in.
Ashley: Show us some of our moves.
Hemalayaa: Oh! Okay. Let me play some music. Alright, so first thing is, for sure, you take off your shoes for Bollywood dance. So you really want to just get a little loosen in your knees, take your legs apart a little more than hip distance, so you have a nice bounce in the knees. And now just shrug your shoulders. It's really easy, so you bounce the shoulders, as if you're saying, I don't know, I don't know. There you go, see. I don't know, I don't know.
Now give it an extra bounce, there you go. Good. Alright, now go from side to side a little. There you go. See even white girls can dance. I'm just kidding. Little points of the finger. There you go, nice.
And now we're going to take one foot over. So take this foot over and back, over and back, it's almost like salsa. So take that hip about now. Take this hand down as you bring that foot down, sit, open both arms, now sit, open, shrug. Okay, wait, the best part is the face; you have to have a silly face. So you wobble the head. There you go, nice.
