More and more tools are cutting in the core these days. And thanks to the improvements in battery technology, cordless models are becoming nearly as powerful as their corded cousins. When it comes to convenience and ease of use, cordless is hard to beat. Most manufacturers offer a wide rage of cordless power tools. Everything from drills, to saws to sanders, even wet-dry vax and flashlights. Most of these are sold in combo kits, which allows a homeowner to purchase a variety of tools in a reduce price. Some like we always one plus system. It utilizes the same interchangeable battery for the entire fleet of tools.
Rather than buying individual cordless tools, each with its own battery and charger, all components of the one plus system are sold separately. You could purchase any cordless tool in the family without duplication. When shopping for a cordless drill, check out the amount of torque drillers. Torque is the rotational force exerted by the bit. Higher end drills will allow you to select the amount of torque you are using to fit the job at hand.
For other applications, you need bit speed rather than torque. Look for a drill with an adjustable clutch setting. The clutch reacts to the resistance exerted on the bit as the density of the material changes. This allows you to draw holes on a consistent depth and prevents you from driving screws too deep.
The absolute key to a good power tool is this-the battery. Cordless tools come in several different voltages. Traditionally, a high voltage battery meant increased power but also increased weight and that can take its toll after a few hours on the job. One of the exciting new developments in tool technology is the lithium ion battery. It delivers substantially more power than conventional Ni-Cad batteries and a considerably lighter weight. The result is more power and longer run times. And a couple of more advantages of lithium ion batteries, they deliver full power in cold weather without warming up or recharging plus they provide fade-free power, so the tool works slow down as our battery runs out of juice.
When you are buying cordless, it is a good idea to purchase extra batteries to ensure you always have a fully charged one at your disposal and you might consider an extra charger if you are going to be using it for extended periods. Thanks to lithium ion, you could finally get corded performance with a cordless tool plus you cannot be cordless when it comes to the convenience and price. For many homeowners, they are all you will ever need.
