Welcome to GrowingWisdom.com and today we are going to be talking about putting your tools away for winter and if you live in one of those climates where you are not doing much gardening during the winter months. You definitely want to clean them up and it is important how you put them away.
If I where perfect gardener, I will be cleaning all the dirt off every time but I got to tell you, I going to the garden I use my shovel it has dirt on it but when I am putting them away for the winter I want to get all the dirt off.
So, the first that I want to do is just basically hose them down, you want to do this really well, and you know I got the hose here, where just, kind of, really give good stream, really clean off, all the dirt on this off this shovel here and there is all sorts of dirt in the crevasses, in the knocks, and in crannies just make sure that you get all the dirt off here.
I am just going to dry off this shovel here and get all the water off because the next thing that I am going to do and you may notice while you are doing this is you still have some dirt so if you do just re-clean it. There is some rust on the shovel and I want to be sure that I get that off as I go in to winter. So, what I go here, is I got a piece of this steel wool and in any other places where I noticed that there are significant amount of rust I basically just going to take these steel wool and take that rust off of it.
The steel wool will really will work well to get the rust off of this shovel. You do not want leave rust on a metal tool all winter long. It is just not good it is going to break down the metal.
So, I will continue to kind of just check this over and because I have been doing this every year for the past few years and I am pretty diligent about the rust, this shovel has lasted a long time this is well over a decade old. The blade is still pretty good, now the shovel is drying and it is cleaning, we are going to preserve it for the winter. So, what I want to do is I am going to put on a little bit of oil. And, the oil that I am going to use is just a common household oil, you could use WD40 this is just three in one oil, I am going to put a few drops of this right on the shovel, just a little bit if you are a cook and after you cleaned out your wok, you oil it, it is kind of the same principle you just want to put a little bit of oil on the shovel then you are just going to wipe this on here. And, all winter long this will sit and really help protect this shovel in. You can see what a great shine it gives it.
Now, my shovel is all nice and clean ready to be hanged up and put away for the winter.
