This is our hand separation drill. At this level, we want to make sure that as we go through the stages of delivering a baseball, from step one through six that we make sure that each phase of the throwing position is done properly. So we segmented into what we call our hand separation drill.
We have our players in their ready position to begin their motion. We begin, drop back, pivot, step, from our step position, each coach will check to see that they are in line with their target, that their glove and their hands are in proper position and on the command of separate, they break their hands. Separate, return, separate, return, separate, from this position, each coach now can make sure that his glove is pointed at his target.
There eyes are focused on the catcher and their target that the ball is not behind their body that is in equal line with their glove that their hands and their arms are straight, we call this the bow and arrow technique. Anyone that has experience with shooting a bow and arrow knows that the bow is placed as we call it in the glove hand; the bow is pointed at the target as we do with our gloves.
The arrow, which is the ball now, must be delivered to the target and that is how we release. Ready positions, begin, drop back, pivot, step, release to your target. Once again, each coach must emphasize that each player look at their target that their glove to be pointed to their target, that the ball has the proper grip and the knuckles are to the sky, and the elbows are slightly bent.
It is in direct line to their target. Set, release, set, and release. Coach’s it is important that, when they become set in this drill and they begin their release that they take a slide step with their knees slightly bent to keep that momentum of the pitch coming home, set.
