This is our momentum drill, which is used to develop pitchers in their ability to relax and be in control of their body movements. What we proceed to do is to line our players up to have their ball and glove in position in front of their bodies, comfortable and relaxed, we pick out and any coach can do this at any level, find the third base line, the grass line, if you are in a gymnasium. You can use the foul line, or any outside line, any perimeter line that you want.
Demonstrate that they stand once again, in a ready position or a comfortable starting position, feet, shoulder is apart. Toe is slightly over the rubber and we tell them to begin our momentum step or drop back step and return to base. Are you ready guys? Drop back, return. Now, as each player is doing this drill, the coach’s responsibility is to check and see that their hand and glove is in proper position that when they drop back, they begin to relax their body by bending a little bit at the knees becoming very relaxed in their movement.
You want to make sure that is your short step. If he is stepping to far back, emphasize just a short step. Watch them do this several times, if they put their head down and focus in your catching, make sure their gloves are up. Remember, baseball is a game of repetition. Drop back, return, drop back, return, drop back, return, drop back, return, drop back, and return.
Coaches, as you watch your players do this drill, it is very important that they make sure that their feet go straight back and they are not turning. It is also important that they do not move their feet left to right. Remember, you are developing momentum to pitch a ball forward. You do not want to go side to side. You want to go back into the target.
