This is our Pivot Drill. This is one of the most important drills you can teach a youth pitcher. So that we get him into what we call proper throwing position. Now, before we can teach them weight balance and loading up, they need to know the mechanics of placing themselves into proper throwing position. In order to do that, we begin by starting with our momentum drill. We follow with a pivot and then we just place ourselves into a proper throwing position.
Once again, ready position. Feet, shoulder is apart, glove in front of their chest. We begin, drop back, pivot, and step. Now, the reason for the step as you will see is that now their pivot foot is now resting against the rubber, which they will use to push you off and drive from. We have them stepped towards home plate. So as you can see, they are now in line, directly with the catcher and his target at home play.
Begin, drop back, pivot, and step. Ready positions, drop back, pivot, and step, a little quicker now let’s go ready positions momentum, drop back, pivot, and step. Coaches, check to see that their foot is parallel and against the line that you are either using, or the grass line as we are using here, or the pitching rubber that we used during a game each player can do this. They can see for themselves if their feet are in proper position or their shoulders in line with the target of throwing home and is there glove under their chin and close to their body.
