VirtualDub can only open a certain number of file types, if you go to File-Open it will tell you. It can open AVI, DivX, MPEG, and even AVS and some file, there are numbers of files that can you can open.
What it cannot open is FLV, WMA, WMV, MOV files, it cannot open those file types and they are very common file types. However, you can convert an incompatible video to a compatible video using a MediaCoder. Here is the MediaCoder, just Google search MediaCoder and you can download it. It is actually like 18 megabytes and it is really easy to use so you just drag and drop incompatible file. In this case, this is an FLV file from YouTube, I am going to click start to convert it.
But first, let me show you the settings I use. I click the Video tab here, and make sure enable video is selected. I have it set to 300 kilobits per second, but you can set the bit rate higher depending on what video you are trying to convert, the higher quality the better, but the larger the file size. Same thing for the bit rate on the audio, but I have it set at 300 kilobits per second.
The container set to AVI, and you can use MPEG or Xvid for best result. Xvid or MPEG4 this two work great on VirtualDub. I have it set to MPEG4. Auto Select Source, Auto Select Backend for the audio, I have LAME MP3 selected, I have it set to 32000 Hz. I think you should set it as Original, I should not have it at 32000 Hz, set it as Original. You can set the Channel to Stereo or Mono, setting it to Mono will make it a smaller file size and you can make it a lot louder.
You can Normalize the audio to make the higher part is really softer and the lower part is a little bit higher, little bit louder I mean. And, you can configure with bit rate you want, again the higher the bit rate the higher the quality but the larger the file you are going to get. If you have problems with synchronization of the video and the audio, you can change audio to PCM, you have to go to the very end and select PCM here.
This thing is actually uncompressed, so it will probably make your files quite a bit large but it will probably fix synchronization as you might be having using LAME. Again, I recommend LAME but not just that I recommend CBR because it makes videos a lot easier to attach. So, once I have my Settings selected, and you may have to play that—play around with it a little bit, just go ahead and click start and it will start converting the video.
It takes a little while but it will give you an AVI that is compatible with the VirtualDub. Some people have asked; where do I download MediaCoder from? So actually it is really simple, just search MediaCoder on Google, click the first results, click Download and download it, latest dub release. And to be fair, there is more than just MediaCoder, I just select primary site here. There is more than just MediaCoder, I can go like to Google, and there is also WIN AVI.
There is another one called Super, Super Converter, I do not know. Just search Super Converter, and then it will give you the page for super video converter. I think it is also free, if you want you can give more recommendations in the comments, it does not really matter but MediaCoder works really good for me. Anyway, thanks for listening.
