Here we have Shelly. Before any make up application can begin, you want to make sure your eyebrows are groomed. For those of us who don’t like to have them plucked or tweezed or waxed off, there’s this cute little tool called the eyebrow razor. Now, the eyebrow razor is very simple. You use it right on your eyebrow, the way it sounds and you razor off all the areas you want to get rid off. Okay, very simple. It’s clean, it’s easy not painful at all. All the unwanted hair ends up on the razor itself.
For most of us who get a little shiny, I like to use a thing called anti-shine. You use it for whatever your face is a little shinier than you’d like it to be and you go over those areas prior to applying on your foundation. You see how that get rids off the excess shine from the areas we apply to. And this is fantastic to use for women before your make up goes on and for men who are bald, who have shiny heads. You know, you need that little extra something without putting any make up on. This is basically, I think of it as a little bit of anti-perspirant for our face.
For women of color, finding foundation is even more difficult because skin that’s a little oilier oxidizes which means that once you put the make up on the skin within ten to 15 minutes, your color gets even darker. So already if we start out Shelly’s face is slightly darker than the rest of her body, so if I put foundation on her skin, that’s going to be the same color as her face, within half an hour, her face is going to be about two shades darker than her neck and the rest of her body, so we have to adjust to what works for Shelly.
So look at this palette. I’m going to use the lightest color I have right now and look at how light this is. It’s probably a color you wouldn’t think of ordinarily using but this is exactly the color that I need to start out with because again, in 10 to 15 minutes, this color is going to oxidize and it’s going to be exactly the color that matches Shelly’s face. As you see, I’m sort of dabbing it and spot applying it. And I’d like to use again the light color for the T zone which is this area around your nose and your eyes. I’m going to use the middle color all over the face and the darkest color to contour with. Obviously, you adjust this to the coloring of your own face. Don’t be afraid to use the lightest color, within ten to 15 minutes, it will become darker. It will blend into rest of your face. Remember, it’s always easier to darken up your foundation with a powder or blush. Once you have it too dark, it’s almost impossible to lighten it up.
So again, you have to have faith if you put the light colors, you have to put the medium colors around your forehead and once we start blending these colors in, you’re going to see how nicely they work and how nicely they are going to end up matching her neck. So Shelly’s neck and face are going to look like they belong to one person because we’ve all seen women with their faces one shade, the rest of their body another. We don’t want to become those women ourselves.
When applying foundation, don’t forget your eyelids. Don’t forget to use the lightest color on your lids. Don’t forget to use it around your nose and also don’t forget to put it around your lips because no matter who you are, you want to always prime your lips so that whatever lipstick, lip gloss, lip pencil you apply, you want to make sure that that does not bleed into the rest of your face and that stays on.
As you can see, already as I’m blending it in, the color is starting to match Shelly’s face and Shelly’s skin. As you can see, I’m using my sponge. I’m using the front part of it to apply the light color. I’m using the bottom part of it to mix in the darker color. So with one sponge, I can apply all the color that I want to the face and never have the two mixed. So you control what you’re doing. The key to make up is having control and not being afraid. Do you see how the make up is blending in? It’s not looking all strange and weird colors and that light foundation that I started out with is the correct color for Shelly. Once our foundation is applied, her face and her neck are similar colors and once I put the powder there, I can adjust it even more so. But now, we have one full person.
I’m going to use my thin concealer brush to contour Shelly’s nose. So, we are contouring the nose. We want to start by the eyebrows and work it down. Now, obviously, we’re not ever going to leave lines that look like railroad tracks. We want to make sure that this size of this line is any bigger than your pinky size, never thicker than your pinky size; otherwise, it’s going to look like dirt on your nose. And to get rid of those railroad tracks looking lines, we could stick our sponge and blend the bottom part of the line down. You might blend it down.
Whenever you apply cream foundation, you really should try to always powder. Now, the powder will help set your foundation. Some people have misconception that powder will help going to decrease this and make them worse. It really doesn’t. It helps seal your foundation in place so it doesn’t move and as you see, I’m going over those lines that we made to make sure that we eliminate all of those dark looking lines and tracks that are on the nose.
Now, when you powder, you can use either a sponge. You can use a wedge. You can use a puff. You can use your brush. Whatever works for you. I like using a little bit of puff and then to make sure that I get rid of all the excess, I take my powder brush and I get rid of all the extra powder. This way, I ensure a nice smooth finish before I begin my make up application. As you can see with Shelly’s make up complete and powdered, her face and her neck are all the same color and should look naturally beautiful.
With the perfect makeover, Shelly’s natural beauty is totally enhanced.
