Speaker: Today's cooking tip is how to cut an onion without crying.
Alright, first of all we got to get rid of the part that makes you cry. And that's that part right there, right where the roots come out. It's like a little bulb inside there and it contains all this gas, once the gas is released that causes you to cry, so what you should do is we got to cut that out as a whole.
So take your paring knife and you're going to cut about one-third the diameter of the entire onion. You're going cut through here like this and cut at an angle. Its going to be cut in a cone shape. Then you are going to cut yourself a circle, be real careful, take this slow. And you are going to do by the third of the onion deep. This should contain the entire bulb of the onion. Okay that should left out in a whole piece here. The way you can tell that you are going correctly, is to look like that. That's the bulb right there. Now do not put this in the garbage disposal, you're going to throw this directly in the trash and you'll be done with it.
Now you are complete to peel the onion, removing all the brown layer. Now I don't have a problem with giving up the a layer or two of onions. So you're going to go all the way around, just take your fingers and get it started, just clean up the onion, all the way to where the whole surface is white.
Now make sure when you cut the onion, don't ever cut the onion on its side like this, straight through the middle of the onion. But always cut from the end point down to where the root was. Just gentle pressure to it starts. You can lay a hand right on top there until it goes all the way through. And there you can see, see how it holds altogether at the ends here. Then you could proceed to cut three lines and four sections. Then you just turn it sideways and cut it however many cuts this way. This way you have for whatever your recipe calls for. And that's it, that's how you cut an onion without crying.
