All right folk’s, this is the second video in a selection of videos whereby we are looking at different parts, different categories, different instruments that are played in music. Now then and the first one we look to the whole section. In this one we are going to look at percussion. Now then what is percussion? Basically, percussion and what we are looking at is instruments similar to the drums add in bongos, congas that sort of stuff. What you will find in big actual bands caught off and there will be a percussionist.
Now then the drummer first of all he is the guy who will keep the timing. Dum, ch, dum, dum, ch, dum, ch, dum, dum, ch, like so the percussionist, he is almost the guy that has learned to have a little bit of leeway in how we play. He has got to keep in time but let us imagine the beats going dum, ch, dum, dum, ch. The percussionist will be able to go [beat] so. As bad as that but you see really a bit the idea behind the percussionist. He is allowed to emphasize the beats.
Now then if you think about it drum and base. A drum and base, there is a lot of percussion internal base [beat] like so what I am going to do I am going to play you two tunes. One is by Mr. Gone it is entitled Mosquito Coast The 98 mixes. Have a listen as soon as this record starts the percussion comes in just have a listen here we go.
[mosquito coast paying]
That is the percussion. This is probably done with a drum machine but this is still percussion here we go.
[mosquito coast playing]
But the percussion is in between.
[mosquito coast playing]
All right that was one for you. Now then the other one that we are going to look at is again one of my old time classic songs. It by a lady called River Ocean and the track is entitled Love and Unhappiness. Now there was a certain mix of this that was released. It was quite big in the clubs but there are other underground mixes. Now this is one I am going to play is the Sao Benitez Remix and is a list of Mr. Bongo’s label Classic Brazilian Recordings. I am pretty sure that the likes and sounds of percussion originated in South American please let me know or I would love to know that.
Check this out first of all I will play a little bit of the actual break because if you have not heard this song before. It is the sort of track that will make you melt. I promise you. This is River Ocean Love and Happiness
[River Ocean playing]
Okay we should get the percussion coming in very shortly.
[River Ocean playing]
Okay this has never been showing you certain aspects of music. I hope you enjoyed it. Practice and enjoy. Take it easy.
[River Ocean playing]
