Butterscotch Tutorial
What is "ripping?"
Michael Callahan: Hi, this is Mike Callahan, "Doctor File Finder," and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on what is ripping? Now, that's the sound of ripping paper but that's not what we're talking about.
We hear the term ripping or rip in relation to computers is referring to the process of essentially copying media, audio, or video from it's source which is usually removable DVD or a CD, and putting a copy like songs on to your hard drive, just a couple of programs that can rip things off of your media include iTunes, Windows Media Player, and a wide array of other software programs.
So when you hear the term ripping or you need to rip the CD. Despite the sound that it sounds like its violent either the media like the physical CD or DVD nor the content that's being ripped is damaged in anyway to the process of ripping. It just as easily could have called as lifting the songs off of a CD but they decided to call it ripping.
So when you heisted ripping or rip, it means to copy media from its source and put a copy on your hard drive, and that's all there is to it.
