Many of us have a dirty little secret in our house and it's called hazardous household waste. This includes every thing from old paint to bug killers, cleaners, motor oils, used batteries, even fluorescent lighting is considered household waste because it contains a tiny amount of mercury. So the big question is how do you do your part to dispose off all of these items properly.
Let's, start with what not to do. Never, pour it down the drain into the storm drain or sewer, or put it in the trash where it can pollute the environment. No matter where you live, there are responsible ways to dispose off hazardous household waste.
Start with Earth911, you can find it on the doyourpart.com homepage. Just type in what it is you've to recycle, and it will tell you where you can take it. For example, some automotive shop will take that used motor oil off of your hands. More often denied, you are going have to take that waste to a full-service recycling center like this one. Every center has a list of different items they accept, so make sure you check before you drop it off. And remember, don't ever toss this dangerous items into the trash because you are then exposing sanitation workers to toxic chemical, and putting those dangerous chemical in the land fill where they can pollute the environment.
It's estimated that Americans buy a million-and-a-half tons of hazardous household materials every year, and getting rid of it the right way is one way that we can all do our part to protect our families and the planet.
And getting rid of it the right, right, right, right, right, right, right way.
