Hi, I am David Epstein and welcome to growing wisdom. And, we are going to talk today about some of the plants that you might have inside your home and of course plants that are inside or outside and some parts of the world. But, today we are going to talk about some of the ferns and of course there are ferns on the Northern latitudes. But, the ferns I want to talk about really are not hardy but they make great house plants.
And, the first one I want to introduce to you is this kangaroo pot fern. And, the rhizomes here are what the new fronts come out of it and they are pretty cool. And, you can sort tell why is called the kangaroo pot, because look how big these are. You know, there is my hand. These make great hanging plants. They do like bright filter light. Now, what one of the miss about ferns, some people thinks they need lot water. They really do not. You actually want to let this get a little dry to the touch in between watering.
This is a hearts tongue fern. Kind of neat and the interesting thing about this guy is right there in the middle. This is all the new fronts unroll right here. Again, I let mine dry out a little bit in between watering.
This next fern I would like to introduce you to, they are marketing, it is the green fantasy fern. But, some might even call a type of a Boston fern. A wonderful fern great front, you want to put these in diffuse light if you can find one of these. Keep it evenly moist but again, get it slightly dry between watering.
This is really wonderful, very soft looking, very wiggle looking and this wonderful foliage here that is coming in, these is almost like a light pinkish brown color. Really pretty with the green more mature foliage around it. If you see your ferns starting to grow like that and they will start to pick up growth late in the winter in to the early part of this spring, give them a little bit of food. What I do not recommend is feeding them when they are not really actively growing. Likes to have bright filtered light and it would do well in a west or maybe at even in an East window.
So, the other fern I want to introduce you to is the one that I have outside myself. I put it outside during the summer and bring it inside on winter and that is an asparagus fern. This particular fern gets these wonderful fronts here and this little pina these are not actually called the leaves. This is little pina does like a little bit of sunshine, a little bit of bright light, it does benefit from some afternoon shade. This is a great hanging fern and it is labeled Boston fern. If you have a question about the ferns, the form section is the great place to go ask somebody. Somebody out there, one of our members is really going to know about how to take care of these. I hope this is helpful to you ferns are great house plant. They are not that difficult to take care of and we hope you come back every week for all of our tips here at growingwisdom.com.
