3. Have a designated storage space for everything you need. It is useful to have a cover in your desk or drawer in which you can store things and that you know what is inside. If you have some useful computing magazines, designate a cover or a drawer on your desk. So that when you need it, you can go to that space and get what you need without having to try to find it under lots and lots of papers. This is also useful for printed documents, etcetera, that need to be stored safely. If your desk does not have any storage space, perhaps invest in a filing cabinet. That is one thing about my home office is that I do have plenty of space not just in my hatch. I have got some drawers with some regularly used equipment. I have got a closet that is full of custom like, not really custom built like drawers. I got some drawers and then some shelves for those drawers, and it looks really, really nice when I am in there. It is enough space for the cords and cables and I keep them separate. I have got a place for everything, that is why I know exactly where I need to go to get something.
4. Do not let things lie around especially liquid. Liquid next to electricity is and always has been a bad idea. Make sure you move everything like papers when you are finished with them. If you have finished playing a computer game, do not think that you would be bothered or cannot be bothered to reach for a box, which is about an arms length away to put that game away. Your desks may also get damaged if you do this, and it might go missing. I am a stickler. I mean I go off the wall, when I open up a container for a movie or a game or a music or what have you, and it is the wrong disc or worst yet, there is no disc in there. I freak, I am like, it upsets me. It really upsets me when anybody takes something out to use it and does it put it away. Worst yet, they put it away in a different location. Are we playing a hide the symbol here, people? Come on, how old are you?
I am not pointing at Ponsy, my wife in particular, if she sees this video, I am just saying in general because it does not make any sense to me.
5. Clean your work area and make sure everything is working. Often get some tissue paper, a duster or some kind and wipe the inside nooks and crannies of your keyboard where dust can lie and get a computer cleaning wipe to clean your screen. Never touch your screen with your fingers and dust your desk often. After cleaning everything, make sure not with water, tests that off your equipment is plugged in and connected correctly and then all is working correctly. This one ensures that your computer will continue to work and hopefully reduce the number of problems you have with it and to keep it clean and hygienic. A couple of notes on this, it is okay to use water to clean things, as long as it is distilled water. It is a good idea to use a certain kind of, I think it is an isopropyl, the same kind of material that you can use on AT reflective lenses like the glasses and what-not. It is okay to use those on LCD screens, you never want to use Windex on like a Plasma screen or an LCD because that would ruin the antique layer of the special coatings on those screens. And another thing, you could actually use water too to clean screens just never put it directly on the screen, you put it on a cloth and then you put it on the screen. You put it on the cloth and then you it on your desk. It is important to note in there as well, and then I have seen this, I have never actually picked them up before in person or never owned one but they have this, I guess, I know they are ultraviolet lights that you could hover over your keyboard to kill germs. It is a good idea. I know there is so much crag that is collected in my keyboard over the years. In fact, I did a video a long time ago of keeping a keyboard cleaner, cleaning a keyboard and may be a good time to pull that one out of the archives. I think I recorded that when back in March about a year ago.
So, David thank you for this top five tips of keeping your work area tidy and usable. You know, you matter which scheme you go with. I do not think it does matter, so long as you stick with that scheme. I think where things can go array, especially in a home office area, as if you do not have a scheme. And you decide one week, you are going to do things one way, and in another week you decide you do things in other way. Well, how you know which week you are on. Just stay consistent. It really helps those of us with partial OCD.
