How To Make A Simple Dress For Under $10.00
Welcome to The Discount Trendsetter Show. I am your host D. Gulley, your money saving coach, here to show you how to save money. First of all, thank you so much, all of you who send me comments, who send me suggestions, who posted remarks on the different videos. Believe it or not, I read all my comments and many of you wanted me to do more how-to videos.
So on today’s show, I am going to show you how to make a simple dress in part one, in part two, we’re going to ask the faso to the dress. So, for today’s show, all you really need to make this simple—I am going to call it a slip dress because it’s very basic. All you need is some safety pins, okay. You need some elastic and of course you need scissors, needle and threads. I already threaded my needles so I can be prepared and you make some really cool fabric. Now I found this sexy print fabric for $1 downtown. So in all—all of my supplies came to about $6, so this dress is going to be very inexpensive.
So the first thing you want to do is just the same thing, basically open up the fabric and I don’t like to work with patterns, I am more of a do-it-myself type of girl. So this is how I am going to measure—how much fabric I need for the dress. You just basically go, just take the fabric around your body and you want to come around to make sure the fabric covers the fullness of your body. So if you are smaller at the bottom and heavy at the chest like me, you have to make sure that you have enough material to cover the fullness of your body.
So basically as we can see, about this much. You don’t have to worry about getting it exactly right because you can always go back in and take it up. It is too big but you don’t want it to be too small.
So it looks like about right here is enough. Of course I have on clothes but I want it to be just a little big just in case. This—you know, I don’t want to cut it too short. So it looks like right here, so basically, I don’t think I want to take a pin. I am going to just lay it out and this is going to be my measuring stick. So, all you want to do is just cut a straight line in your fabric, just, you know, don’t worry about getting it exactly right. It is trial and error but as long as you get pretty close, you’re going to be okay.
So I just cut your fabric straight down and straight line, as straight as you can get. And the first step we want to do is add the elastic and this is why we use elastic because you need a way to get into the dress. You know, if you go ahead and sew this straight down and it is too tight to run in your hips and you can’t pull it up. At the end basically, you can’t wear the dress.
And since it takes more time to put in a zipper or to add buttons, I decided to use just a simple elastic because it’s a lot quicker to put in and I am just going to do the same thing to see how much I need. I am going to measure it around my chest because this is going to be at the top of the dress, so that is why we’re measuring it around the chest.
So the same thing. As you can see, I just kind of tick it around the top and so, I am going to cut it. It is okay to go a little bit like one inch out just to give yourself a little extra cushion just in case you cut it too small.
So once you get your elastic, what you want to do is just straighten out your fabric and put the elastic at the top and we are going to pin it to the fabric and here is why.
When you start sewing the elastic inside the fabric, once again, you don’t want it to move because you might sew it in the wrong place. So just basically take a safety pin on both ends and pin the elastic in place to you r fabric. Very simple; to the fabric over. So it’s almost like we hand made the top of the dress.
So you just want to tack it over very simple, short and easy. Sew the elastic in place. So I have already threaded my needle very simple thread to match the color of the fabric and you are just going to go ahead and just go from top to bottom. Don’t worry about the at the imperfect in the beginning, you can always go back and sew over or make it tighter, for time sake, I am trying to do this really fast but I probably will go back and go over the scene at least two more times.
Since I am doing it by hand, now if you are lucky enough to have a sewing machine at home, of course, you could definitely use your sewer machine but if not, you know you can do it by hand. Just go over the scene a couple of times. And now—and I am trying to do this very quickly but of course I want you to take your time and try to get it nice and neat and you know this dress is going to be hot so I want you to make a cute dress as well and send me pictures. So ladies, we can do this. As a team we can do this, we can come up with some really cute outfits without breaking the vague, because this dress is going to be made for under $6.00, so you can’t beat that; including sales tax, okay. So just basically keep sewing across, so as you can see I am just still trying to sew the material down at the top to hold my elastic in place. I am almost at the end and this is just one step. This is step one.
I am wrapping this up. I need to cut the thread. So when you are done, you basically should have your first stitch right? You just—you basically sew the elastic inside the dress and it is going to look just like this. Just remember, we’re making a simple a-line flip dress.
So now that you have your elastic in, the second step you want to do is make a small hump at the bottom. And it really should be really thin. So it is the same thing, this time you are not putting in elastic at the bottom but you just, you want to make a small hem. So I'm thinking nice and neat, you don’t want everyone to know you make the dress yourself so—
I will have another needle thread it and I am just going to do the same thing. I made a small maybe one inch tuck to make the hump. You can do one really thin or you can go thick depending on how short you want your dress. This one is probably going to be right at my knees, so. I made a nice little one inch hump and I am going to do the same thing, just tuck it and we are almost done ladies. This is really easy. It really is.
Once you do your hump, the only thing you have to do is sew the side of the dress and you are done. So, let me hurry up. That is okay. While I finish this, it is now time for the Financial Tip of the Week. Stay tune. I will be right back.
Financial Tip Of The Week
Happy Thanksgiving
Before the break, I showed you step one which was adding your elastic to your fabric. In step two; humping your fabric, so step three is just to tie it all together. Basically what you want to do is turn the fabric inside out or should I already be inside out and we are going to connect all the size together.
So, it should look like this, where you connect the top and the bottom together. So you basically should just be making one scene straight down. Okay, as you can see I am just basically making a straight line connecting the two pieces together.
Now once we get to the top with the elastic ends, you actually should be sewing through the elastic, so you can eventually remove the safety pins. I did not forget about them.
Okay so, we’ll cut the thread. And so when you are done, it should look like this. It should like—you just made a simple straight down dress like. So I am going to try it on just so you guys can see how it looks.
As you can see ladies, I am wearing my new dress what do you think? Check it out.
