Jonathan: Alright folks, how to make a tune out of a tune? I will show you. First of all, this is what you need. You will need a CD player; you do not have to have one of those. You can have any CD player but, it has got to have to major factors. First of all, it is got to have what is known as a Pitch Control. Now, 99% of CDJ turntables or CD players used for DJ purposes will have a Pitch Control. The Pitch Control is there to increase or decrease the actual speed of the music.
Secondly, and just as important, you will need a Que Button. Now most CD players got this but, what happens is when you press the Que Button like so.
(Demo)
I keep my finger on Que Button, the music will play. As soon as I take make finger off the Que Button,
(Taking off the finger)
It stops but here is the deal, it will go back to its original position. So, as follows,
(Music Demo)
Now then, this is where it gets quit interesting. At the moment, the Pitch Control is dead center. Only get this sound,
(Music Demo)
Off let us say I moved the Pitch Control to the minus position. Any sort of area, it does not really matter at this point, have them listen. The main thing we want to hear is the sound and the difference in sound.
(Music Demo)
Now, this is what happens, put it back to the center position.
(Demo)
This is what happens when I move the Pitch Control to the plus position.
(Demo)
Now, maybe you can see where this is actually going. Now initially, this will involve quit a bit of practice and initially, you need to just find the track “The Beginning” of the track. You need to find an initial sound. It is a god way of practicing as you start to get better at this, and you will during the mix, you can basically find any track. Find a certain segment of that track where you have got an initial sound that you like to use and you can do exactly the same thing prior to mixing the tracking.
What I will do, I will pause the camera. I will give you a general idea of what you can do. Baring in mind, the more practice you get, the better you will be at it. Hold tight.
Alright here we go now. I am no expert at this, believe me. Now, the initial video is this one
(Video clip)
And hopefully over next week, couple of weeks, just remind me because I have got a memory like a calendar spatula. So it has been whole day so spin in on the sift. That is right, I got a memory like sift.
I will do other videos and what will do, we will do this but we will actually utilize this in a mix so, first on now, Que Button.
(Demo)
So what we can actually do? We can do two things. One, we change the actual sound. We can change the key, the tone of the sound and at the same time, we can do a bit of drumming.
(Demo)
So, have a listen to this
(Music Demo)
So you imagine doing something like that actually in the mix.
Now like I said, initially, it’s a good idea to find the beginning of the track just to practice. So hopefully over the next couple of weeks, we will get another video together where by we will have a track maybe here playing and we will have a track over there and we will do that kind of thing while this track is playing and then when we are ready, we can mix that track in. So in other words, what we are actually doing, we are almost pretending that the track prior to being mix in is like a keyboard. We are almost playing a keyboard. We are almost making our own tune out of a tune. I hope you get it. Thanks for watching. Practice and enjoy.
