Alright folks, it is Jonathan here. This tutorial is all about getting your mix from a good mix to a pro mix.
First of all, a good mix is whereby you got one track, you bring another right in, it sounds all right, they are in beat, but you can tell where the join is. In a pro mix, the whole idea is the structure of the actual mix and the structure of those two tracks just fitting nicely together. That is what it is all about. Now, to do that you need to listen of course to the melody, the key, the baseline, the beat, et cetera but we are going one above there. The main thing is with this particular actual tutorial is we are going to be listening to or counting the bars in the phrases. Here is the deal. I have listened to this track here. I know there are 16 phrases, 16 times 4, there are four bars in each phrase which is 64 bars, whichever way you want to look at it but I will just going to talk about the phrases. There are 16 phrases in this guy here. As soon as those 16 phrases are finished, we have vocals coming.
On this one here, we have two phrases at the end where there is just a beat and then I have gone back 18 altogether. I am going to stop them both exactly at the same time. If I do that what will happen is both of these will work together over 16 phrases. As soon as this one hits the 17th phrase, the vocals will stop. As soon as this one finishes the actual 16th phrase, then we just have the beat and believe it or not, as soon as this one finishes the 16th phrase, the vocals finish. So, vocals finish here, vocals coming exactly at the same point. Now, why we are doing this? We are taking that mix that you are going to do to the next level. What is the point in doing this? Well of course, it means that you are not going to get vocals over vocals, baseline over baseline, and you can start to your mix. What you need to do is you need to get the beginning of this track and you need to count, count one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four with regards the bars or one, one, two, three, two, one, two, three, three, one, two, three, four, one, two, three with regards to the phrases. Count how many phrases you have got and just jot it down on a piece of paper.
Then what you need to do is this one over here that is going out, you want to do the opposite, you want to find the end of the track and then wind it backwards and count how many phrases, how many bars you got there and then work it out. To begin, with this video maybe like four, three, five phrases and you are going to do this. But eventually, you will realize it is just logical. I got this one set up at exactly the right point whereby if I press play at the beginning of this chart and stop this one off, they will both start off when I set it at the same time. I want to start off at that point because I have worked back 18 phrases, but I want to stop this one off whether I start this one.
Here we go (music playing) and again, the whole idea for you to make to the next level (music playing). So there we got one track (music playing) put it together (music playing). Here we go (music playing). See, together (music playing).
Alright, now again, bear in mind that this is a tutorial so it is not going to be expert because I do not have any headphones or anything like that.. The whole idea of this particular video is to show you how you can take your mix to the next level. Like I said, do not just like I like the tunes and do the mix, do that if you want to if you are not bothered and you just want to listen to somebody in the car or in your right part. But, if you want to do a pro CD and you want to make people think, my God who did this, you can just say I did it. You know why, because you spent a lot of time and it is worth it, fantastic. This is what it is all about. Practice, practice, practice and enjoy. Thank you very much.
