Alright folks, in this one, I am going to show you a bit of a DJ tip, okay? It is a tip how you can phase records without using there is really expensive mixers, okay? You know the expensive ones that got little button there, you press and it will sort of a tunnel effect, alright? What I am going to show you, how you can do it by means of just the basics simple mix. The one I have got is I got gain, EQ, hi-mid, low balance, very dodgy faders and that is about it okay?
Two very important things you need is good turntables and they have to be in the same position, same speed position by this I mean, with the techniques in the green part. Where the green lights up or both of them. The second and just this important thing is you need the identical records, okay?
I am using at the moment whistle just bugging from years ago. Also they have to be the same pressing, so they are identically the same. There is no point having one at 33, one at 45 because they will eventually glide and go off, okay?
So, what I am going to do is start at exactly at the same time (demo)
Okay, you can hear a bit of an echo, that is because they are not exactly at the same position (demo). Now what I am going to do, I am now going to start moving the pitch until I start to hear it phase.
Not that way, the other way (demo)
It is getting there, can you hear it going higher?
Getting higher, there you go, rephrase mode. Now watch when I bring one of the sliders down (demo)
Other one backed up (demo)
Phasing (demo)
Okay, right, how are you going to use this right, simply this. You got one record playing, you play that one, you bring another one in. You slowly mix this record in, okay? After about 30 or 40 seconds or almost as soon as you brought this one in, taken this one out, what you need to do is you need to get an identical tune that you are playing, put on the platter. It has to be in exactly the same position, vocals, beat as this one. So, you are going to have to move it until you get exactly the same place, okay?
And then, when you are ready, and you have got it in exactly the right place where you start to hear it phase a little bit on the headphones, then you can bring it in. And you can mess around with it. Now, stereo, okay, the beauty about doing it this way as supposed to the other way on these little mixers here where you have got a button, if you have got a balance on either side, what you can do, you can actually have the right turntable on the right speaker, the left turntable on the left speaker. Now, what does sound brilliant is if you slow this one down a little bit, yes, you can touch the platter or move the pitch control but what depends is actually here, is an echo, not just an echo from both speakers, they hear an echo from individual sides. So, left and right echo and then what you can do is you can actually swap them over so now, you have got the echo in the opposite direction, back, forwards, back, forwards, you can really mess around and then put them both in the center again, put the pitch down back so you can hear that phase effect and away you go, okay?
That is a very, very simple way of getting a good effect of a very, very cheap mixer. Believe me, try it, it is good fun, enjoy.
