Alright folks, Jonathan here, in this video we are looking at the Master Tempo. On this guy here which is the CDJ-800 Mark 2. Alright now then, what is Master Tempo, what does it do? Use into a track, you got a beat, melody, bass line, whole shebang have you not? If you actually moved the pitch control the minus position, all hit will slow down and also the tone, the feel of the track will go along with the actual beat.
If you move the actual pitch control to the plus position then what happens, the beat will speed up but also the track will go like so. Now then, check this out, this is quite cool. I will give you a demonstration first and then I will give you a good reason what is the good idea to have the likes of the Master Tempo.
First of all, let us listen to the track without the use of Master Tempo.
(Demo)
Actually have a listen to the sound that is what we are looking at the sound.
(Demo)
Now, we are going to speed up.
(Demo)
Okay, now what I am going to do, I am going to press Master Tempo. Now, again listen to the track, you will notice when I move it to the minus position you will actually hear the track slow down but what you will hear as well is the sound, the actual tone, the key of the track will stay the same as it was in this position here. So why do we not go again.
(Demo)
Now, we will put it back into the center position and then we will move it up to the plus position.
(Demo)
Now, we will do an experiment, what I am going to do is we are going to have the Master Tempo button pressed in. I am going to slow it down and then what I am going to do, I am going to depress the Master Tempo button while the pitch is slow down and let us listen to the difference in the sound of the music, that is important is the actual sound of the music that we are listening to not the speed, here we go.
(Demo)
Speed it a little bit forward.
(Demo)
Right now, I am going to press Master Tempo.
(Demo)
Okay, did you notice the drop in the key, the actual drop in the sound? Now, we will do the opposite.
(Demo)
Set it again to the center, press Master Tempo. Speed up and again have a listen.
(Demo)
Okay right, we will pause that. Now then, why do we need Master Tempo? When is it a good time to use Master Tempo? Now, let us say for example you got two tracks that sound absolutely fantastic together, they are brilliant. They are in the same key, same tone, same feel but one big problem and that is they are not at the right BPM, maybe once at 120, once at 125. Now, of course you could do a couple of things, you could speed the one up that is at 120 and you could slow the one down that is at 125 but maybe then they will sound right. the key, the tone, the feel would be right, now they could be perfectly in beat but it does not sound right now, this is what you can do.
If you have a look here now then, right we will set that. Let us say for example, at this particular position alright let us say here. Let us say for example we got the pitch here and like I said now the two tracks sound perfectly together, they are fantastic, they sound really well but the are out of beat so what do you do? You press Master Tempo now what happens, it will keep the same sound, the sounds will not change or the sound on this track will not change but as soon as you start to move the pitch control down, the actual speed will start to slow down. In other words, what is happening, other beats are catching up, in other words, we are getting them exactly the same BPM but because we have set the Master Tempo it means the tone, the key, the feel of the music will stay exactly the same as it was before the pitch was moved.
Now, this is a brief idea into why it is a good idea to use Master Tempo and as usual ladies and gentlemen, practice and enjoy.
