We talked about positioning at the third base. You can certainly set it up in whatever language you like to talk about it or if you just like to yell out the commence individually. If your coach is certainly, or if you part of the youth league team it is helping out. We talked about the three different separate locations of the third base men should play. We can refer to them as 1,2, and 3 or in a double play depth and back whatever you like.
Michael let us show that first one. Positioning for a lay off header and an inning somebody that is pretty fast that you know that you have got a situation where you have to be tied on or they are going to ban on you or want to be up on the grass. Now, the grass in every field it is cut a little different but we certainly want to be up six or eight feet in front of the bag that will allow Mike an opportunity to get to the baseball and still have the chance to throw the runner up. This is our one position or our end position, lead off header in an inning or a runner that you know that can really move.
Our two position or our double play depth, Mike is going to take his speed and put him on the back of the bag. So, we got the line our self up with the back of the bag, this will give him a chance to get adjust a little bit more room and yet we do not want to be too far away because we want that ball and his glove, and on its way to the second base as quickly as we can. That is our double play depth or our two position.
Our three position is going to involve playing back right about there Michael. That is good. We want to get back as far as we can around and it may not be very quick. He has got two strikes. Any situation that will allow our third base means to back up and cover a little more ground that is why we want to be able to do.
A lot of that is going to be dependent on how you feel about your arm strength. If you can make a throw from there, great, if you got a really strong arm, you can make a little bit better throw and we can even get a little further back. But be sure we maximize our range.
We try to prevent balls that go between short and third here by being back as deep as our arm strength with that particular third base when anyone allows and I might mentioned something at this time too and that is positioning late in the game when we have a tight lead.
We want to make sure that we go no further than one step in a dive to the line where Mike is at, it is pretty good right now. We want to protect the line late in the game. Nothing down the line is going to resolve in a double where the man’s now in scoring position.
So we will tell our first base man or our third base man tied to the line late in the game. So, again, we got our one position which is up, two position, double play, three position back when a headers down on the count and then our line position where we are going to protect the line late in the ball game.
