We are going to start out just working JD to first base so we know what techniques we need to use footwork wise to be able to make the play. Okay, JD slide behind. You can do this with one catcher, you can rotate in three catchers if you have them, for however many you have and we can do it just as fast as I can go out and get the ball, and we can get another one put down. Okay, we get JD in his stance. I want to call either first, middle or third and that will give him an indication which ball we want him to go get.
The ball down the first baseline which is the one we are going to do to begin with, just a couple of keys on that. First of all, whenever we feel the bunt, be at any of the three actually, we are going to scoop the ball with two hands. Number two, since that ball is riding so close to the line, we want him once he fields a ball to take a drop step back, clear himself away from the running before he makes the throw. We do not want to have him throwing over the runner okay, ready JD?
One, scoops, clears the runner, makes the throw. Okay, notice when he comes out, he is going to call the ball. We ask our catchers, if they know that they can get to the ball, call it immediately and that frees the pitcher up from having to drive himself in here as fast as he can to get the ball, but it is nothing(ph) going to have to receive. So, if the catchers know he can get it, call forward immediately and again, we call balls in here with catchers exactly like we would in the other position on the field. Mine, mine, mine, three times. Okay here we go, carry one from the middle ball this time notice how he will come to the left to the ball running self off and get ready to throw the first, ready middle. “Mine, mine, mine”, he scoops, sets himself, gets himself ready to throw. It is imperative to catch your bounce as quickly out of his position to be able to field the ball.
Now both and the third baseline, we are going to step over and you will notice that when JD does, he will step across the ball and when he sets up, his left shoulder be point at first base. And we do not like to slide behind the ball such that where is nearest of the third baseline simply because we find the catcher is in that dropping their arm angle and we end up with ball down the right field line. Here we go, ready? Free! “Mine, mine, mine”, notice how the minute he stood up, he had the left shoulder pointed at first base. Okay, let us run through them again, “Mine, mine, mine.” Again, binding technique not a real difficult thing to teach. What is difficult is making sure that you stay on top of it, that if he makes a mistake during the game, when comes into a dugout. Let us make sure that we get it corrected, write it down, and remember it, whatever you have to do, but let us make sure we get it corrected so that when he goes after the ball, number one, he takes charge to situation, calls loudly, makes the appropriate steps and makes a good strong throw to first base.
