How To Play Baseball: Chop Step Drill

As I tell, outfielders or any position on the infield, anytime that you take a step more than you need too in order to get the ball out to your glove or to do whatever it is you have to do, you are giving the base runner two steps. Two steps for the base runner, especially at a high school level equates to at least six feet. And boy, that is something you do not want to do. How many players do you see at first base that is closer than six feet? The first drill that we are going to do is what we call a “chop steps.” This is our effort to make sure that the kids technique, right, left, backward at an angle is always good and always what we need. We do not want to take any extra steps, because when the ball is hard hit and it is to the right or to the left, we have to get there and get there in a hurry. So Mark is going to have them through the chop steps and I will comment as I get going, go ahead coach. Notice how they move their feet. They are into the breakdown position, the nice backhand. Now, they are going to the crossover step and getting the nice breakdown position, making sure that they head down, watching the ball in. They come back – you can do this with any number of players that you have, whether it is four, eight, or ten or how many you can. Now, we got a ball little deeper in the hole, they are going to take an angle on it. Notice how there heads are down, the gloves open, I want to make sure we follow a good technique rules on our backhand. See how they setup at the same time. Foot work is always the same. Even though we got some different age groups kids, they are still setting up at the same time. Charge the ball. We run through these five rotations, to the right, to the left, backward angle right, backward angle left and then forward for the ball is coming right at us. At that is the chop step drill, we start at each practice with it, whether if it is just a couple of minutes a day, boy it is a good reminder for kids and how they are suppose to move for the ball.
