The object when holding runners on base is to keep the runner close to the bag or as close as we can. Avoid allowing him to get a good jump and yet still being able to get back to your position and field what you need to have covered. We are going to start first to our short stop in primarily coverage alright here we go. Pops the glove, works his feet and bounces back into his position.
Notice how the man leading off second base, when he heard the foot steps he bounces back toward the bag that is all you have to get in to do. When the pitcher releases the ball we just have to have him move back. Okay now we got a left hand hitter up and I want the second baseman to work primarily coverage on this play. Okay, here we go, he bounces back now the short stop will just make a very small effort to hold on.
Again the second baseman is in primarily coverage, the short stop the secondary and that secondary man, and we want him to hold his position just a little bit longer and a little bit more.
