There are seven ways to score from third that you cannot from second, so the three objectives of baseballs give around us here especially with less than two outs. Once you do, it is important however, to note how we want to get the lead and how we want to get a break. So many times in baseball games, where youth games or high school, with less than two outs, fly ball on the outfield and the base runner breaks down the line and is unable to tag up and score in a sacrifice flag. That can be avoided if you work out of a little bit in your practices or you can work it out on your for that matter thinking through each situation.
First situation, we want our runner to be aware of how to take an appropriate lead of third base such that if the ball were contacted down the line and this runner were hit with the baseball that he is not going to be out. Again, and I will remind you, all base runners should stay on the base until such time as they have been given the signals and they got a clap of the hands or whatever you like to use, and then they are free to take their lead.
Okay, as Ryan is watching me give my signs, as soon as I clap my hands, he is free to go ahead and take his lead. Okay, now he takes his lead. He is going to start in foul territory and Ryan is going to take what we call a walking lead. He will get a decent lead to begin with and as the pitcher releases the ball, he is going to walk down the line. The weight is going to be on the right foot or left foot whichever you prefer to have as long as your weight is leaning forward.
Once the ball crosses the plate and it is not been contacted, he is going to return in fair territory. So he is going to go down and foul, so that if you were hit with a foul ball, it is not going to be out. If you are hit in fair territory, you are out. And we do not want to do that once again run a 90 feet from home plate, but yet once the ball is not been contacted, we are going to go from foul territory and return back in fair.
The reason we do that is because not you have made it terribly difficult for a catcher to make a pick off, from the base to the third base where normally held the runners. He can hardly throw to the top over the runner’s head so many times. They will just shut down and will make to throw at all. So we are down and foul, back in fair.
