Option number two on our throwing package is geared for more advanced player, requires a less time to get rid of the ball but it is a more difficult technique so, you may want to think about what type of an athlete you have or what age group you are working with prior to teaching option number one or option number two. Okay JD, let us take a look.
You will notice I have laid the bat down on the middle of the plate and this would certainly apply the either technique, this bat being in the middle of the plate. We want to make sure that our catcher with his initial step goes one direction or the other with this bat so that we do not end up stepping on top of the plate. In option one, where we went 3-2-2, our first step is going to take us to one side of the bat of the other and that where we got a little extra room where that plate is cut out and we got a little angle there in which the steps. We do not want to step directly on the plate so I have done that just as a reminder to JD not to step directly behind the plate and end up stepping on the plate with his left foot.
Okay, you might recall in option number one that on a ball to the left, we took 3 steps, on the ball down the middle, we took 2 steps and on the ball to the right, we took 2 steps. This is a little bit different. In this particular option, we are only going to take 2 steps on any given pitch that we received. So a ball to the left, we are going to take two steps, a ball down the middle, two steps and a ball to the right, two steps. And we are going to phrase these or refer to this as a jump turn a little bit. It is a slide step with the feet, it is a very quick and rapid movement. I am going to have JD run through each of the three so we can get a good look at him.
Okay, JD, we are going to go to your left to begin with. Ready? Go. You will notice that when the glove went out, you slide your glove out. The glove went out through the outside pitch, he is going to drag a back across his chest and he is going to square up with the jump turn okay. Let us go again. Ready? Go. There we go 2 steps and now we got eh ball down the middle. His first step needs to take him away form that bat, either side of the bat. Ready? Down the middle. Okay, notice the quickness of the feet.
This is very similar on the ball down the middle and a ball to the right of the catcher. It is very similar to option number one, maybe a little quicker movement with the feet, but very closely aligned with what we had there. The big differences coming in on the first pitch we talked about.
Okay, ball to the right. Ready? Go. Jump turn, notice how you got him the other side of the bat to keep himself away from the plate. Ready? Go. Okay, we always want to make sure as we square up, we have our shoulder, hip and knee pointer right at our target, be at second base or third base or wherever it happens to be that we are throwing. So, the big difference is going to be on this side of the plate, we are going to drag the glove across the chest and be able to get rid of that ball in a hurry.
