We are going to have Michael to pretend he is going to take the shot here. Just go through with your shot, Mike. I am going to use a “Crossover Step”, mostly used outside.
Guards and forwards have a tendency to use this pivot more often than not, but as a shot would go up. I would cross over my right foot over my left foot, make contact here with his body without fouling him, maybe with my forearm and stepping into him here, making contact—contact with his knees, my arms are up, my elbows are back, my hands are pointed to the ceiling, and my head is on the rim.
Gregory, why do you not demonstrate here?
What I like you to do is just, we will go through dummy shots without the ball. Michael, I would like you to do is take one step to your right and then a second step to your right, and Gregory, you are going to slide. Let me show it first. You are going to slide one step to your left and then crossover. Reason being is the shot is up on the rim, or after at least someone’s hand, for approximately three seconds. So, if I could slide with him outside one step, then on his next move, I would go and make contact. If he takes another step to his right, I would crossover right over left foot and make contact.
Again, what I want to try to do is feel him with the back of my back side and I am down here, slide and go. I am down here making pressure with his knees, in contact with his knees. If he would come back to my left, I can feel him with my elbows. I do not want to have my hand down.
Some people, you see them box out. They have their hand down here and they are holding. They have both hands down here. That is a foul. We want to have everything with our backs and down here, pressure. If he would come back to my right, I can feel him here because my arms are back. I am trying to get them back behind me and if the shot comes off that rim fast, I have to have my hands up so I can get that rebound.
Gregory, let us try that. The offensive person is going to take two steps to his right. The defensive person is going to slide one step to his left and then cross over, right over left foot.
Ready, go. Contact, hands up, gets your elbows back a little bit Gregory, so you can feel him back if he would come back.

All right. Our offensive person is going to take two steps to his right. The defensive person is going to slide one step to his left and then he is going to cross over, right foot over left foot. He is going to be down. He is going to be down low. He is going to have his elbows back. He is going to have his hands up and his head is on the rim.
Let us try that.
Ready. Go. Step, slide, arms up. Good, not bad. Come back again.
We will just go through it slow.
Ready. Go. Step, slide, arms up. Not bad.
Let us go two steps to your left. This time, the offensive person is going to take two steps to his left.
The defensive person is going to take one step to his right, and he is going to cross over, left over right foot, and box out. This is the way it should look.
Ready. Go. Step, cross, down, low—my arms are back, my weight is forward, my eyes are on the rim.
Go!
Okay, let us switch it around.
Switch it around Michael and Gregory is going to take two steps to his right. Michael is going to crossover.
He is going to slide one step to his left and he is going to crossover, right over left foot, make contact, have his hands closed because again, we do not want to foul anybody or hold their shirt, and keep his head up.
Go! Step, slide, arms are up. Good.
Again, this is called a “Crossover Pivot”. Ready. Go! He crosses over, right foot over left foot, makes contact, stays low, his head is up.

This move is mostly used for people down the pan a little bit more. Forwards and close. When a shot goes up, he is going to step and go. He is still going to take his step to his right. He could take two steps and I am going to reverse pivot on my left foot and reverse into him. He is going to step, I am going to step away, and reverse and slide into him.
Again, go! Reverse pivot. If he would come back to my left, he comes back here. I can still feel him around. He comes to my right, I can feel him here. I am not pushing my hands down to hold on him, just able to use my lower body and my elbows.
Okay, let us try that. Michael, you are going to take two steps to your right a little closer. We will start about arms length apart. Go! Good. Again. Go! Okay, not bad. Switch it around. Go! Reverse pivot. Again. Go! Step and reverse.
