Rule number three is to use fundamental footwork. We want to explain a couple key concepts about this. First, when you go to do your defensive sliding, I want to put Anthony in a defensive position. We want you to use the largest muscle in your body; that will be quicker on defense. That is going to be your thigh muscle, so instead of, when you move just lifting and stepping which makes you go heel to heel. We want you to lift and explode with the largest muscle in your body to make you quicker, faster and help you to accelerate with momentum.
Anthony is going to go through this defensive slide drill. Anybody can do this, you can do it on the sidewalk, you can do it in the gym, and you can do it in your driveway. We always like to go half speed the first five repetitions over and back. He is working on keeping his heels apart. His head is always staying level. You will notice he is exploding out. He will lift up his right leg and explode with his left, and stop. Now, we will put him back on the line now that he is warmed-up. He is going to go full speed and he will do a ten repetition.
Notice, he always stays level. We like to work short distances because we think that defense is normally played on short distances. We need 10 repetitions as plenty to get done what you need to. It builds in your footwork, your quickest, your conditioning and your mental toughness. The wrong way to move your feet is let your heels to come together because your head will come up and down, and it is easy for a defender to cross you over, change direction on you and you will be out of control.
