General disruption of the center position; it is a big man in the middle, and tall and intimidating players. No one ever looks at point guard’s height to see how tall they in the roster. What do you look at when you are going to the opposing gym, look at the media guide. Find out how tall they are, do you not? You talk to college coaches and you always ask them what are you looking for. I deal with a lot college coaches said a lot of coach’s players and say coach what do you need this year. First thing out every college coach say nine out of 10 times, I need a big guy.
How important is the center? John Wood, the coach of UCLA who won 10 NCA National Championships said he only recruited two positions ever in this order. What do you think of the other one was? You got it, in that order. How many can remember a famous point guard that UCLA had?
Can anybody remember a famous point guard when John Wooden was there? Nobody remembers the little guys, you see. You remember the centers from UCLA, do you not. Cream of Barr who is a center became cream of Barr. Bill Walden, Swannater do you ever hear of him, he played in the NBA for a lot of years. He played behind Bill Warden. Newspapers all around the country said Swannater is the second best center on Campus and in the country and he was. Phenomenal center, that is how important center is.
If you center just because you are big, it does not relieve you of responsibility to be better. You have to get better. It will make you team better and it will make you more valuable. You have to get better. Being big is not enough.
Center needs to have excellent post-up and post move skills and be an excellent post-passer. He needs to have a good midrange jump shot.
The center is a natural leader on and off the floor because of their size and stature. As a center, it is important you realize this and use it to your advantage to help your team and set the pace for your teammates.
Probably the two most important positions on the basketball court are the center and the point guard. Centers should and need to control the low post and have the ability to be threat from the blocks. If you are threat from the blocks it opens up other opportunities for your teammates and if you are not of threat then you are simply a player with a jersey and a liability to your team offensively.
