Next drill we want to show is just basic full court dribbling drills. Again, we are focusing in on not just developing skill of dribbling. We also want our players to develop the skill of going full speed with the ball and there is a difference between running a fast break and having the ability to create a fast break. Most players can run a fast break; dribble the ball up the floor. Very few players have the ability with the ball in their hand to sprint past defensive players and create a fast break. Some of the best in the game of basketball that do that are Mugsy Bogues and Spud Webb. They do it better than anybody. Magic Johnson was a great one at doing this.
Once again we are going to layer this in by developing a skill at three quarter speed making sure that player’s eyes are up and we tell them to focus in on the rim. So all of our players will look at the rim, they dribble out at three quarters speed. Everybody goes through it ones and then we will try it at full speed. We will dribble down right handed and come back left handed. Go. Eyes are up. Now we have our eyes on the rim. Learn to see the whole floor. Keep your eyes up on the rim. Full speed means to go as fast as you can under control.
We try to tell our players to dribble the ball hard. The harder you dribble the quicker it will come back to you. The easier it will be to control. Now we will try to go full speed as fast as we can under control. Go. Go down right handed come back left handed. Place the ball ahead of you do not wait forward. We want our dribblers to push the ball ahead and almost have to catch up to it. If they do that and dribble it hard it will never get behind him. Good job! Great job! The weeks good.
