First drill that we are going to do is a very basic drill for developing correct fundamentals for lay-ups. We have one line on the block on the right side, second line of the block on the left side. We are going to alternate laying up the ball into the basket. The players will both start with the ball in the correct shoulder pad. Left side is on the left shoulder pad, right side is on the right shoulder pad.
Stacey will step forward with their left foot, lay it in. Brad, go. So they are just going to alternate lines and alternate turns so that their timing off of each other. It seems like a very simple drill, it is a very simple drill, but it does help to breakdown in a simple format the ability to make a left handed lay-up which many players have difficulty in doing.
Now, the next thing is the reason that it becomes important for us to develop a player in making a left handed lay-up is if he is driving to the basket and there is the defender, he comes and he lays in it with his right hand, I have a very good chance to get a piece of that without fouling him.
Now, even as a smaller player, he comes into the basket, I go up back after the ball, he shoots with his left, I have to foul him to get to the ball and get up in the air or create a problem. So he ends up getting a three point play out of it. So this is why we like this drill. I want our players to go up strong, go up with the fundamentally correct hand and they can create some extra scoring opportunities for themselves. Let us just go to this drill for a minute alternate sides. You will notice the players will switch lines after they shoot on each side.
